  ABSTRACT

ANTI-NOCICEPTIVE ACTIVITIES OF COMBINED EXTRACT OF CARDIOSPERMUM HALICACABUM L. AND DELONIX ELATA L. LEAVES

This study was intended to evaluate the antinociceptive activities of combined petroleum ether extract of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. and Delonix elata L. Phytochemical analysis was carried out using standard methodologies. The analgesic investigations were carried out against two types of noxious stimuli, chemical (formalin-induced pain) and thermal (hotplate tests). The effects following indomethacin and morphine pretreatments were also studied. The results were subjected to statistical analysis. These plants had steroids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, oils, phenols and tannins and significantly increased the reaction time of hotplate tests. It decreased the lickings of formalin-induced pain. These results showed that these plants had both central and peripheral acting effects and this was confirmed by its effect on both phases of formalin-induced pain. In conclusion, combined petroleum ether extract of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. and Delonix elata L. has central and peripheral analgesic properties.
