  ABSTRACT

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF FAST DISINTEGRATING TABLETS OF LOSARTAN POTASSIUM USING NATURAL PLOYMERS

In this new era of novel drug delivery systems, formulation research is oriented towards increasing the efficacy of existing drug molecule through these novel concepts of drug delivery. Losartan potassium is widely used as an antihypertensive drug, which is a potent drug candidate for developing in to Fast Dissolving Tablets (FDT’s). It has low bioavailability due to first pass metabolism. Hence the main objective of the study was to formulate fast dissolving tablets of Losartan potassium to achieve a better dissolution rate and further improving the bioavailability of the drug. Fast dissolving tablet of Losartan potassium were formulated by using microcrystalline cellulose with different concentration of superdisintegrants like kollidon CLM, sodium starch glycolate, and crosspovidone, All the batches were prepared by direct compression using standard round faced punch on a sixteen station rotary (Cadmach, Ahmedabad) tablet punching machine. Disintegration time and drug release were taken as the basis to optimize the fast dissolving tablet. All the tablets were Prepared & evaluated for various parameters like hardness, weight variation, friability, thickness, disintegration time wetting time and dissolution time. Kollidon CLM in the concentration of 15% gives faster disintegration in 12sec and releases up to 100% in 13min and the assay was compared with that of marketed losartan potassium tablets.
