  ABSTRACT

MAGNITUDE OF SLEEP DISTURBANCE AMONG ELDERLY POPULATION 60 YEARS AND ABOVE IN URBAN AREA – CHIDAMBARAM

Sleep characteristics changes throughout the lifespan. In general, the duration of sleep declines with advancing age. The present study was undertaken to find out the magnitude of sleep disturbance among elderly above 60 years in Urban population Chidambaram and to correlate sleep disturbance with select socio-psychological variables. 211 elderly from 2663 population were interviewed with pretested proforma to elicit socio-psychological characteristics and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to find out sleep disturbance. The magnitude of sleep disturbance among elderly was found to be 66.8% in this study. Significant association between sleep disturbance and socio-psychological variables such as age, physical illness, marital status, significant life events and education was elicited. If underlying causes can be treated, secondary sleep disorders will be resolved
