  ABSTRACT

IDENTIFICATION OF VOLATILE CONSTITUENTS FROM FLOWERS OF ACACIA NILOTICA LINN THROUGH GC-MS

Medicinal plants are source of important therapeutic aids for alleviating human ailments. Thus natural products have been a major source of drugs for centuries. In tune with this effort, the objective set for the present investigation is to identify the chemical constituents of the flowers Acacia nilotica Linn. In order to determine the nature of the principle component responsible for its medicinal property. All parts of the plant have medicinal properties. Taking into consideration the medicinal importance of the plant, the volatile organic constituents were analyzed using GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) and the structures were confirmed by genesis. A total of 58 constituents, representing more than 96% of the volatiles were identified. The main compounds, were Hexanoic acid (0.3%), cis-Linalool Oxide(0.2%), Isoterpinolene (0.2%), Linalool (0.7%), 1-Menthol(0.5%), Octanoic Acid (20.6%), á-Cyclocitral (0.1%), cis-Geraniol (0.7%). 2-Bornene(0.06%), Nonanoic acid (8.5%), 2-Undecanone(1.1%), Naphthalene, 1,2-dihydro-1,5,8-trimethyl- (8.8%), n-Decanoic acid (10.1%), ç-Elemene (0.1%), Nerylacetone (1.0%), Farnesane (16.2%) and Dodecanoic acid (18.9%). This herbal medicine traditionally used as antibacterial, gastric tonic, digestive and stomachic. Consequently, this fast and simple method can be used for the analysis of the volatile compounds emitted from Acacia nilotica
