  ABSTRACT

EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDENT ACTIVITY, IN-VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY AND PHYTOCONSTITUENTS OF SCHLEICHERA OLEOSA (LOUR.) OKEN

Schleichera oleosa (Lour) Oken is used as medicinal plants in several countries. In this study methanol and aqueous leaves extracts of Schleichera oleosa were evaluated for antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, antimicrobial activity of S. oleosa was investigated by agar disc diffusion assay and phytochemicals screening was carried out by „Guide to modern techniques of plant analysis”. The Phytochemical screening of methanolic and aqueous, leaf extracts revealed the presence of various secondary metabolites. The FTIR analysis of the crude extract of S. oleosa gives information about the distribution of functional groups and provides a basis for comparison of compositional differences between isolates and among samples. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of Cyathocline lyrata extract with ascorbic acid as reference, where the IC50 values for the Schleichera oleosa leaf extract (IC50= 14135 μg/ml) and IC50 value were said to be less than the standard ascorbic acid (IC50= 2.816 μg/ml). Schleichera oleosa ethyl acetate leaf extract showed good inhibition against all six Organisms. The highest inhibition was noted S.aureus (15 mm), P.aeru(11 mm), P.acne (11mm) and E.Coli (10mm)
