  ABSTRACT

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY IN PERILLA FRUTESCENS COLLECTED FROM UTTARAKHAND

The aim of this study is to determine the chemical analysis and antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts of Perilla frutescens. The essential oils obtained, were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The essential oil yield in the leaves of all the populations varied from 0.15 to 0.36%. Altogether, 16 volatile compounds were identified and a variation in their contents was found. 1-(3-Furanyl)-4-methyl-1-pentanone (perillaketone) was found to be the most abundant volatile compound (44.7-69.2%), followed by isoegomaketone (7.3-27.6%), trans-caryophyllene (0.1-17.8%) and linalool (0.3-5.0%).The antioxidant activity in terms of free radical scavenging activities of methanolic extracts was measured by 2, 2, diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The highest IC50values based on the free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) were shown by the seeds extract of samples collected from Tapovan, Joshimath as compared to the other samples. Relatively, the present results suggest that Perilla frutescens seeds shown potential as sources of natural antioxidants. Relatively, the present results suggest that seeds of Perilla frutescens might be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants
