ELTOID MUSCLE’S INTERESTING ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS – REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

The deltoid muscle is one of the muscles of the shoulder and consists of three portions. The anterior portion origins from the clavicle, the middle portions from the acromion and the posterior portion origins from the posterior border of the spine of the scapula. It presents with many anomalies regarding its origin and insertion, blending with other muscles, accessory slips, absence or deficiency of one or more parts. The purpose of this paper is to include studies and reports about the anatomical variations of the deltoid muscle that have been reported since 1734 and were undertaken electronically using Medline and Embase. The search produced many articles from which 10 were finally chosen for discussion due to their interest. The deltoid muscle is an important muscle of the shoulder and its anatomical variations are important for the correct diagnosis and treatment of trauma and shoulder pathology
