  ABSTRACT

ANTI-OBESITY ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF RHUS MYSORENSIS AND ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF CYPERUS ROTUNDUS ON HIGH FAT DIET INDUCED OBESITY IN FEMALE RATS

Objective to evaluate the effect of ethanolic extract of Rhus mysorensis (EERM) and ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus (EECR) on high fat diet (HFD) induced obesity in female rats. The effect of ethanolic extracts of Rhus mysorensis (EERM) and ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus (EECR) on change in body weight, lipid profile, and liver marker enzymes were examined in the study. High fat diet induced obesity female rats were administered ethanolic extract (200 and 400 mg/Kg, p.o) of Rhus mysorensis (EERM) or ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus (EECR) or standard drug Orlistat (120 mg/kg) or rats received normal diet or High fat diet group. The body weight of rats was recorded at Day 1, 15, 29 and 42 of the study in each group. After the last test drug administration i.e. on 43rd day of study, rats were sacrificed by cervical decapitation and blood was collected and analyzed for glucose, lipid profile, liver transaminase enzymes. HFD control group rats showed statistically significant (p<0.001) increase in body weight, glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL -C, VLDLC, SGOT, SGPT and statistically significant (P<0.001) decrease in HDL-C as compared to normal diet control group rats. The rats co-administered with HFD+EERM (200 & 400 mg/kg) and HFD+EECR (200 & 400 mg/kg) showed statistically significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight, glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL -C, VLDL-C, SGOT & SGPT and statistically significant increase (P<0.05) in HDL-C as compared to HFD control group rats along with Orlistat 120 mg/kg treated rats. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that test extracts of Rhus mysorensis and Cyperus rotundus have potent anti-obesity activity to reduce body weight on high fat diet induced obesity in female rats. Ethanolic extract of Rhus mysorensis (EERM) and ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus (EECR) observed in this study strongly indicated their great potential as anti-hyperphagic, anti-obesity and obesity associated complications like type 2 diabetes mellitus
