  ABSTRACT

COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON INHIBITION OF CARBOHYDRATE DIGESTIVE ENZYMES BY NEISOSPERMA OPPOSITIFOLIUM (Lam.) Fosb. & Sachet and QUERCUS LANATA Sm. EXTRACTS

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic potential of Ethyl acetate extract of stem bark of Neisosperma oppositifolium (Lam.) Fosb. & Sachet (EAENo), Ethanol Extract of stem bark of Neisosperma oppositifolium (Lam.) Fosb. (EENo), Ethyl acetate Extract of stem bark of Quercus lanata Sm. (EAEQl) and Ethanol Extract of stem bark of Quercus lanata Sm. (EEQl) by inhibition of carbohydrate digestive enzymes (α-amylase & α-glucosidase) and Glucose uptake by isolated rat hemi-diaphragms. These results indicate that EAENo, EENo, EAEQl and EEQl showed dosed dependent inhibitory effect in α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. EENo and EEQl showed very efficient inhibitory activities than EAENo and EAEQl. The effects of EENo and EEQl were similar to that of standard drug acarbose. EENo and EEQl showed potent glucose uptake in rat diaphragm with insulin and alone than EAENo and EAEQl. It can be concluded that EAENo, EENo, EAEQl and EEQl possess delay the absorption of carbohydrate with help of inhibits the α-amylase & α-glucosidase and increases the glucose uptake
