  ABSTRACT

ANTI-IMPLANTATION AND ANTIFERTILITY ACTIVITY OF AZADIRCHTA INDICA TINCTURE (AIT) AND AZADIRCHTA INDICA 30 POTENCY (AI 30) IN FEMALE ALBINO RATS

Neem has been extensively used in ayurveda, unani and homoeopathic medicine and has become a cynosure of modern medicine. The use of plants as emmenagogues, abortifacients and as local contraceptives was well known to the ancient physicians of India as is evident from some of the available books, monographs and reviews. Therefore the present study to evaluate the Anti-implantation and Antifertility activity of Azadirchta indica tincture (AIT) and Azadirchta indica30 potency (AI30) in female albino rats. Thereafter, the female rats were randomly divided into four groups of six rats each thus: Vehicle control - 1% tween 80 at the dose level of 10 ml/kg; Ethinyloestradiol and levonorgestrel (Ovral L – Standard drug); Azadirchta indica tincture suspended in Vehicle; Azadirchta indica30 potency daily for 19 days respectively. On day 20 of gestation, each rat was laparatomised under high ether anaesthesia. The uterine horns were exteriorized and incised at the greater curvature of the horns. The latter were examined for sites of implantation and resorption. Number of corpora lutea of pregnancy, number of live foetuses as well as weights of the foetuses and placentae were also determined. The number of fetus appeared to decrease more with AI 30, which may suggest the AI 30 is more effective than that of AIT. All the fetus of treated rats grew up normally without showing any physical abnormality indicating that the AIT and AI30 is not abortifacient and teratogenic in albino rats. Absence of toxicity and lethality at the dose administered justifies the safe nature of the AIT and AI30
