  ABSTRACT

GROSS-HISTOMETRIC EVALUATIONS OF PRE-PUBERTAL, PUBERTAL AND POST-PUBERTAL BULBOURETHRAL GLANDS OF INDIGENOUS BULLS OF BANGLADESH

The study was undertaken to evaluate the histo-morphometric parameters of the bulbourethral glands of indigenous bulls. Twenty eight indigenous bulls of three age groups: pre pubertal group (˂1 year, n=4), pubertal group ((1.5- 2.5 years, n=16) and adult group (˃3 years, n=8) were selected. The length, width and the thickness and weight of both the left and right bulbourethral glands were recorded separately where the left glands were found slightly higher in all parameters. The gross parameters changed significantly with age (p˂0.01) and reached the maximum at adult stage. The gland was covered by collagenous fibrous connective tissue. The thicknesses of capsule increased significantly (p˂0.01) whereas the thickness of intralobular and interlobular connective tissue decreased significantly (p˂0.01) with the advancement of age. The histometric diameters of both luminated and non-luminated glandular end pieces, epithelial height of the glandular end pieces and the duct increased significantly (p˂0.01) with age. The lining epithelium was pyramidal or columnar with basal round, oval or flattened nuclei, with distinct membrane. The cytoplasmic zymogenic granules increased with age and reached maximum at adult. It concludes that histological parameters showed the bulbourethral gland of indigenous bull become functional at pubertal and reached fully purposeful at adult age.
