EFFECT OF MERREMIA EMARGINATA BURN. F. ON ISOPROTERENOL INDUCED MYOCARDIAL INFRACTION IN RAT
The hydroalcoholic extract of whole plants of Merremia emarginata (Burm. F.), Convolvulaceae family prevented isoproterenol induced increase in lipid peroxidation and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Biochemical analysis in serum viz., LDH, CPK, CRP and SGOT were performed. The hydroalcoholic extract of Merremia emarginata at the dose of (100, 200 & 400mg/kg/p.o respectively) produced significant salvages the heart from isoproterenol induced myocardial ischemic injury. The results indicate the antioxidant, antilipid peroxidative and anti-ischemic activity of Merremia emarginata was justify its potential therapeutic value in the treatment of ischemic heart diseases in albino rats. Phytochemical screening of the plant leaves reveals the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, tannins and saponins
