INVESTIGATION OF ACUTE AND CHRONIC ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES OF EXTRACTS OF PREMNA TOMENTOSA WILLD. AND PREMNA LATIFOLIA ROXB. IN RATS
Objective to evaluate the acute and chronic anti-inflammatory properties of methanolic whole plants extract of Premna tomentosa Willd and Premna latifolia Roxb. against carrageenan induced rat paw edema and Cotton pellet induced granuloma in rats. MEPT (200 & 400mg/kg) and MEPL (200 & 400mg/kg) was found to reduce inflammation significantly (p<0.01) in rat paw edema model. MEPT (200 & 400mg/kg) and MEPL (200 & 400mg/kg) were found to significantly inhibit the cotton pellet-induced granuloma in rats, a test which has significant predictive value for anti-inflammatory agents acting by inhibiting the mediators of chronic inflammation. On the basis of these findings, it may be inferred that Premna tomentosa Willd and Premna latifolia Roxb. is an anti-inflammatory agent that blocks histamine and serotonin pathways. The results are in agreement with the traditional use of the plant in inflammatory
