METHANOLIC FRUIT EXTRACT OF GARCINIA INDICA AMELIORATES PROGRESSION OF DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

To evaluate the antihyperglycemic and renoprotection effect of methanolic extract of Garcinia indica (MEGI) on streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. The blood glucose levels were estimated every week during the 28 days study period. The blood related parameters as ESR, PCV, total haemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin estimated at the end of study period. The metabolic parameters serum glucose, lipid profile, serum creatinine, albumin, total protein (TP) and bilirubin measured. Urine analysis was performed by estimating urine volume, creatinine, uric acid, and urea and creatinine clearance. At the end of 28 days treatment rats were sacrificed and kidney sections are used for histopathological studies. In Oral administration of MEGI (200 and 400 mg/kg) for 28 days exhibited a significant reduction in serum glucose, The MEGI restoring the blood parameters, serum lipids, kidney parameters and urine analysis in STZ diabetic rats. Treatment with MEGI ameliorates the histological structure of kidney. Our results thus suggested that the “Garcinia indica” could be used as a safe alternative antihyperglycemic and renoprotective drug for diabetic patients Garcinia indica a rich source of bioactive molecules including xanthones, flavonoids, benzophenones, lactones and phenolic acids
