ESTIMATION OF TOTAL PHENOL, FLAVONOID CONTENTS AND DPPH FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING ACTIVITY OF Oxalis corniculata LINN.
The present study was aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of the methanolic leaf and stem extract of Oxalis corniculata Linn. and to estimate it’s phenolic and flavonoid content. DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl) radical scavenging capacity was carried out to evaluate antioxidant activity. Total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated using FolinCiocalteau’s reagent and total flavonoid (TF) content by Aluminium chloride colorimetric method. The total phenolic content of the leaf and stem extract was found to be 30.46±0.0465 and 18.1±0.0207 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) /g dry weight while the total flavonoid content was found to be 18.56±0.0432 and 2.56±0.0485 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g dry weight respectively. It was observed that DPPH IC50 value of leaf and stem extract of Oxalis corniculata Linn. was 1200.378 and 1268.882 µg/ml respectively. The present investigation revealed that the leaf and stem extract of Oxalis corniculata Linn. contain significant amount of phenols, flavonoids and good antioxidant potential which can be correlated to it’s medicinal values
