A REVIEW ON PREECLAMPSIA AND ITS TREATMENT STRATEGIES
Hypertensive Disorders of pregnancy are an important cause of severe morbidity, long-term disability and death among both mothers and fetus. Among all the Hypertensive disorders that complicate Pregnancy, Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia are the major causes of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The etiology involved in development of preeclampsia include genetic and immunological factors. Defective Placental implantation, failed maternal remodeling causes imbalance between pro-angiogenic factors and anti-angiogenic factors leading to pre-eclampsia. The most preferred agents for treatment of preeclampsia include labetalol, Nifedipine, Methyldopa, hydralazine etc. The appropriate selection of antihypertensive drug is the major issue to be concerned in pre-eclampsia. Recent Guidelines of National Institute of Clinical Health and Excellence for Hypertension in pregnancy suggests that the preferred choice of drug is Oral Labetalol to Oral nifedipine and Methyldopa
