  ABSTRACT

COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF ANTI-ARTHRITIC POTENTIALS OF PTEROSPERMUM CANESCENS ROXB. AND PTEROSPERMUM HEYNEANUM WALL. BY FREUND’S COMPLETE ADJUVANT INDUCED ARTHRITIS IN ALBINO RATS

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory autoimmune disorder causing symmetrical polyarthritis of large and small joints, typically presenting between the ages of 30 to 50 years. Only management of the disease is done by using anti-inflammatory agents like NSAIDs, disease modifying antirheumatoid drugs and by corticosteroids etc., but yet a complete cure for this disease is still lacking. The present research exertion was undertaken to evaluate and compare the antiarthritic potential of ethanolic extract of Pterospermum canescens (EEPC) and Pterospermum heyneaneum (EEPH) against Freund’s complete adjuvant (FCA) induced arthritis in rats respectively. Paw volume, mechanical hyperalgesia, arthritic score and the body weight were measured periodically for 28 days. From the present study EEPC and EEPH treated groups showed a dose dependent significant antiarthritic activity as compared to the arthritic control. Comparing EEPC and EEPH, dose dependently EEPC proved to have better anti arthritic activity than EEPH
