INVESTIGATION OF ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY, ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY, TOTAL PHENOLIC AND MONOMERIC ANTHOCYANIN CONTENTS IN DIFFERENT EXTRACTS OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA L
The aim of this study was determined the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in different extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Rosella). Antioxidant activities were carried out by methods of DPPH scavenging, reducing power and thiocyanate method. The monomeric anthocyanin contents were assayed using the pH-differential method. Total phenolic substances in extracts were assayed with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antimicrobial activity was performed by agar disk diffusion method against Pseodomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Klebsiella pneumonia (ATTC 700603), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Enterococcus faecalis (clinical isolate), Candida albicans (ATCC 60193), and Candida crusei (clinical isolate). All extracts of H. sabdariffa were exhibited high total antioxidant activities at 1000 µg/mL concentration. DPPH scavenging activity was the best in aqueous extract (0.355±0.01mg/ml). The high level of total phenolic substance was detected in ethanol extract (53.15±1.72mg GAE/g extract). Monomeric anthocyanin content was the high in aqueous extract (14.79±2.08 mg/extract). The reducing power of all extracts increased depends on g extract concentrations. All extracts were exhibited antimicrobial activity against tested microorganisms
