  ABSTRACT

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME MANAGEMENT DURING PREGNANCY

To explore the treatment, outcome and prognosis for carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy. A retrospective study of 65 pregnant ladies diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome with electrophysiological studies at the third trimester who were followed in the neurosurgical and maternity clinics during their pregnancy, follow up of their symptoms was performed through the course of 12 months after delivery. All pregnant patients were managed either by medication, splint, surgery or just reassurance during the year 2014 at King Hussein Medical Center; Royal Medical Services. A total of 65 pregnant patients were treated with different modalities, of which 55 patients (84.6%) were treated with Non-surgical approach ( reassurance , medication, wrist splint or steroid injection). Only 10 patients (15.4%) needed surgical intervention. Nonsurgical management options are cornerstone for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy, from our results we recommend that carpal tunnel syndrome cases during pregnancy to be managed by non-surgical options as a first line of management until delivery , in the majority ofcases avoidance of surgical intervention was achieved , More robust RCTs should be carried out to provide solid evidence regarding the best method to manage carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy
