  ABSTRACT

SOCIOECONOMIC OF SHEEP POX IN THE NORTH AND SOUTH KORDOFAN STATES OF THE SUDAN

Sheep pox (SPP) is transboundary animal disease. SPP is characterized by fever, papule, nodule and death. SPP virus is DNA virus and can infect sheep and goats together. It is endemic, seasonal and host specific. However, it has been reported to occur in all seasons of the year. It is considered one of the constraints of the international trade in animals and animal products. It is occurred in central Africa and North Africa, the Middle East, India, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei. This paper is to study and understand the socioeconomic effects of SPP in Kordofan region. 540,050 SDG cost was estimated per average sheep flock out of total flocks value of 2,636,350 SDG. Animal production is traditional and animal-raising and crop productions were the main sources of the income and livelihood. The results concluded that the epidemiology, production, management system and seasonality of SPP have played a significant role in social and economic life in study area.
