models. Free radicals are implicated for more than 80 diseases including Diabetes mellitus, arthritis, cancer, ageing etc. In the
treatment of these diseases, antioxidant therapy has gained an utmost importance. Current research is directed towards finding
naturally occurring antioxidant of plant origin. In Indian system of medicine, Atalantia monophylla linn is an important
medicinal plant and it has been used in various ailments and as health tonic. To understand the mechanisms of pharmacological
actions, the in-vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Atalantia monophylla linn bark was investigated for the
activity of scavenging DPPH radical, nitric oxide radical and hydrogen peroxide radical. The in-vitro antioxidant activity the
methanolic extract of Atalantia monophylla linn bark produced good antioxidant activity and was comparable with that of
standard ascorbic acid. From which conclude the higher concentration of the methanolic extract exhibit more antioxidant
activity when comparing to lower concentration. These results clearly indicate that Atalantia monophylla linn bark is effective
against free radical mediated diseases. The data suggests that the extract contains compounds may be effectively utilized as a
wide spectrum of antioxidant agent.
<Email>satheesh.phyto09@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>3</volume><issue>1</issue><year>2012</year><keyword>Atalantia monophylla linn,Bark,Antioxidant,DPPH radical,Nitric oxide radical,Hydrogen peroxide radical</keyword><AUTHORS>P.
